Goole RUFC 2nd team made a statement in their Yorkshire Vase campaign, running out 31-12 winners away at Barton upon Humber in an entertaining first-round tie, despite a tight pitch that suited the home side's big pack.

Goole made the brighter start, opening the scoring after 10 minutes when Danny Holt crossed following good work from Aaron Jerry-Murray, with Declan Cook adding the conversion to put the visitors 0-7 up. Barton hit back on 20 minutes, their powerful forwards driving over from a maul for a converted try to level things at 7-7.

Aaron Jerry-Murray then took centre stage, crossing for his first try on 25 minutes - converted by Cook - to make it 7-14, before adding a second five minutes later, again converted, to send Goole in at half-time with a 7-21 lead.

The home pack's size began to tell on the compact playing surface, allowing Barton to control the tempo and slow the game down after the break. Goole captain Brandon Harman finished off a superb length-of-field team try on 42 minutes, started by a long run from Jerry-Murray and involving the whole side, though Cook's conversion attempt was off target, making it 7-26. Goole's pack continued to assert themselves, with a try from Ray Coates on 55 minutes (conversion missed) stretching the lead to 7-31, before a late Barton consolation score on 65 minutes made the final score 12-31.

Both Goole wingers were a threat with ball in hand throughout, with Brodie Tinning and Aaron Jerry-Murray consistently looking dangerous out wide. In the pack, Rob Maidment put in a strong shift off the bench, while Joel White was named Goole's Man of the Match for an outstanding all-round performance.
