Having not played the week before, Goole were looking to get back to action on a bright sunny afternoon at Westfield Banks.
Scunthorpe always prove to be tough opponents and this was no exception as the visitors threw everything at the home side in the first 10 mins using their big forwards to pick and go and gain yards up the middle.
Goole were pegged back in their own half as poor discipline saw the penalty count grow but Scunthorpe could not find their way through a solid blue wall of defence - a big feature of the twos season so far.
Goole took all of the the first quarter to settle themselves with some uncharacteristic mistakes putting pressure back on themselves but they felt it was a matter of time and with Scunthorpe's pack tiring, the home side seized the initiative on 30 minutes when centre Jake Parkinson burst over next to the posts for the opening score. Dennis Marwood playing his first game back after an injury in pre-season slotted the extras for a 7-0 lead.
It was Parkinson who scored again shortly afterwards from a neatly worked catch and drive from the forwards, the centre latching onto the last pass, Marwood again converting for a 14-0 HT lead.
The opening 15 minutes of the second half saw Goole play some of their best rugby of the season with the forwards playing right on the gain line to hit gaps and offloads to put support in space.
Three great phases direct from the kick off saw James Donoghue go over unopposed before skipper Louis Sugden took advantage of a quick tap penalty from Harry Patrick for 24-0.
At this point it looked like a landslide was on the cards but the home side did take their foot off the gas letting in two tries before Ollie Marshall capped off a fine passage of play to score, Marwood again adding the conversion.
Craig Fenton on for the injured Charlie Walton at number 8 then burst through a gap following a good offload to hit the gas, round the fullback and score before Dennis Marwood capped off a fine afternoons work with a try of his own next to the posts to add to his 5 conversions.
So a good work out following no game the previous week and in truth the home side were far too strong for Scunthorpe despite their being no score for the first half hour.
Goole’s set piece worked well at both the scrum and line out as they won a stream of possession to allow the backs plenty of front foot ball that they took advantage of.
The defence was solid again and behind the scrum Parkinson and Marshall had their best outings of the season in the middle of the park. Good to see Dennis Marwood back after a layoff and a number of the boys putting their hand up for first xv selection.
The MoM could have gone to a number of individuals but Reece Almond just shaded it. The apprentice going about his business with another no nonsence performance.
