Goole RUFC’s 2nd XV earned a hard-fought 41–27 victory over Barton & District at Westfield, pulling clear in the second half of an entertaining Counties 4 Yorkshire C encounter.
Sunshine, a light breeze and a good crowd provided the perfect setting for rugby. Barton played their part throughout, combining a powerful scrum with a competitive spirit that ensured Goole had to work for their win.
Goole made an early breakthrough when Harry Whiteley crossed after six minutes, with Louis Sugden providing the assist and Joseph Grimbleby adding the conversion for a 7–0 lead.
Barton responded with two tries and a conversion to move 12–7 ahead, before Brodie Tinning’s try brought Goole level. Another Barton try restored the visitors’ advantage, but Tom Devenish crossed with an assist from Craig Hutton, and Archie Owen’s conversion put Goole 19–17 in front.
The contest remained finely balanced as Barton struck again to take a 22–19 lead. Goole’s response proved decisive. A try in the 50th minute by Jamie Drury, created by James Dougherty edged the hosts back ahead, and they began to make their superior pace and handling quality count.
Jonny Acaster crossed next, again following an assist from Dougherty, to extend the lead to 29–22. Acaster then turned provider for Owen, who scored and converted his own try to give Goole valuable breathing space.
Devenish added his second try, with Dougherty supplying his third recorded assist of the afternoon, taking Goole’s tally to 41. Barton’s late reply underlined their determination and brought the final score to 41–27.
This was a pleasing win for Goole against opponents who remained competitive from start to finish. Barton’s scrummaging posed a sustained challenge, but the home side’s attacking pace and quality ultimately settled an enjoyable afternoon of league rugby.
