A dominant display from Goole was not fully reflected in the final score line as the 4 try bonus point just eluded the Westfield men which would have been just reward for their efforts in front of a good sized crowd.
Goole exerted early pressure and showed their intent when good interplay between backs and forwards a saw Tom Barker driven over for an unconverted try after only six minutes. The next 20 minutes was played out in the middle of the pitch, both teams probing but getting little change from the defences until a break in midfield by James Dougherty found Jamie Shand in support to break the fullbacks attempted tackle to go over by the posts, converted by Rhys Moore for 12-0. The visitors had the chance to respond immediately after the restart but their penalty attempt hit the post no was cleared by Goole.
The second half started and Goole set up camp in the Wetherby half, dominating territory and possession but missed a penalty attempt after 5 minutes before Rob Shand broke clear but seemed to stumble and lose control of the ball just before the try line, but the referee was playing an advantage and Rhys Moore added the simple kick for Goole to lead 15-0. Further dominance from Goole saw them right back on the attack and more crisp inter passing saw James Walton over by the posts for a try on his 21st birthday weekend, converted by Moore for 22-0. With 20 minutes to go and Goole's defence seemingly impregnable the bonus point try looked a formality but the visitors had other ideas and with 5 minutes remaining an opportunist effort saw a chip over the Goole defensive line bounced kindly for the no.10 regather his own kick to score a converted try 22-7. In the dying moments Goole pushed hard for the 4th try bonus point and looked to have made the decisive break but an interception saw the last Wetherby defender return the ball 45 metres to score a second consolation score, converted for a final score of 22-14.
The disappointment of not turning such a dominant performance into a 5 point win was etched on the players faces, showing their ambition and desire to keep the maximum pressure on the top 2 as they consolidated third position in the league.
