Goole RUFC return to home soil this Saturday, 31st October, when they welcome Old Rishworthian to Westfield Banks for another important Counties 1 Yorkshire encounter.
Having made an outstanding start to the campaign, Goole will be looking to maintain their unbeaten record and strengthen their position at the top of the table. However, as recent weeks have demonstrated, there are no easy fixtures in this fiercely competitive division, and complacency will be the last thing on the minds of the Goole coaching team.
Visitors Looking to Turn Their Season Around
Old Rishworthian arrive at Westfield Banks enduring a difficult start to their league campaign, sitting 11th in the table with just one victory from their opening five matches.
That solitary success came on the opening weekend, when they edged out Keighley 29–27 in a closely fought contest. Since then, results have proved frustrating, with away defeats against Old Crossleyans (34–22) and Hullensians (70–38), followed by home losses to Old Otliensians (35–7) and Yarnbury (31–20).
Their defensive record has been a particular concern, with only Doncaster Phoenix having conceded more points in the division. Nevertheless, Old Rishworthian have shown in previous seasons that they are capable of competing strongly at this level, and they will undoubtedly see Saturday's fixture as an opportunity to kick-start their campaign.
Goole will be well aware that a side with a point to prove can be a dangerous opponent.
History Suggests Home Advantage Could Be Crucial
Recent meetings between the clubs have produced some entertaining encounters, with home advantage frequently proving decisive. Goole supporters will have particularly fond memories of the last meeting at Westfield Banks in April, when the home side produced a commanding performance to run out 56–10 winners.
The return fixture earlier that season was a very different story, however, with Old Rishworthian securing a convincing 37–15 victory on their own ground in what was arguably one of Goole's most disappointing performances of the campaign.
The pattern stretches back several seasons. In 2022/23, Goole suffered a narrow 20–17 defeat away from home before gaining revenge with a 34–17 victory at Westfield Banks.
Indeed, the 2021/22 season provided a rare reversal of that trend, with Goole winning 33–5 away before Old Rishworthian snatched a dramatic 30–29 victory at Westfield Banks.
If history tells us anything, it is that these two sides are capable of producing unpredictable encounters, regardless of their respective league positions.
Goole's Resilience Continues to Shine
For Goole, confidence is understandably high following an excellent opening to the season. Recent victories over two of their principal rivals, Old Crossleyans and Old Otliensians, have demonstrated both the quality and determination within the squad.
The extraordinary 38–36 victory over Old Crossleyans, secured by Rhys Moore's last-gasp penalty, was a perfect illustration of the character within the side. Having surrendered a commanding half-time advantage, Goole somehow found the composure to snatch victory with the final kick of the match. That was followed by another hugely important result away at previously unbeaten Old Otliensians, where Goole produced a disciplined and determined performance to maintain their winning momentum.
These are precisely the types of victories that can define a season, although the coaching team will be keen to ensure that the lessons from those closely contested encounters are not forgotten.
Injuries Test Squad Depth
One growing concern for Goole is the mounting injury list, which threatens to test the strength and depth of the squad as the season progresses. James Walton is unavailable following a concussion sustained in last weekend's match after a high tackle, while Eddie Newsum remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from concussion. Both Malcolmsons also remain unavailable through injury, further limiting the options available to the coaching team.
Although these absences are frustrating, they also provide opportunities for other members of the squad to step forward and demonstrate their capabilities. The depth and quality of the playing group will undoubtedly be important if Goole are to maintain their challenge over the coming months.
Opportunity to Strengthen Position at the Summit
Saturday's fixture could prove particularly significant in the wider context of the league table.
With Old Crossleyans facing a difficult trip to Bridlington and Old Otliensians travelling to West Leeds, Goole have an opportunity to increase their advantage over their nearest challengers.
However, the priority must be to focus on their own performance rather than events elsewhere. Old Rishworthian may arrive as underdogs, but Goole cannot afford to take anything for granted. A strong start, disciplined defence and the ability to turn possession into points will be essential if the home side are to secure another valuable league victory.
With confidence high, home advantage and an unbeaten record to protect, Goole will rightly approach the contest as favourites.
But as everyone at Westfield Banks knows, league points are earned on the pitch, not on paper.
Come along to Westfield Banks on Saturday, get behind the lads and help roar Goole on to another important victory!
