Goole secured another bonus-point victory with a 50–14 win over a hard-working Hullensians side that faded in the final quarter, conceding four converted tries.
While seven tries underline a team growing in confidence and cohesion, Goole will feel they left points on the field, squandering several opportunities in their eagerness to cross the line.
There was little early indication of the eventual margin, as Hullensians’ backs looked dangerous in the opening exchanges and came close to the first score before being forced into touch.
Goole struck first through Sam Smith, who showcased his quality with a powerful break from halfway to open the scoring. Rhys Moore converted and soon added a penalty to extend the lead to 0–10.
Ollie Raynor was influential throughout, and with strong carries from Dec Cook and Matty Lill, Goole began to gain the upper hand. However, it took until the final play of the half to add a second try. From a lineout in the Hullensians 22, Louis Greaves delivered a neat pass to Josh Malcolmson, who crossed to make it 0–15 at the break.
The second half began in scrappy fashion, with frequent stoppages disrupting the flow. Hullensians eventually broke the stalemate, their ball carrier emerging from midfield traffic to score under the posts and close the gap to 7–15.
Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished. Cook and Smith again breached the defensive line, and although Smith was halted just short, the resulting penalty and yellow card proved costly. From a quick tap, James Walton powered over from close range, with Moore converting to stretch the lead to 7–22.
Matty Lill nearly added another following a strong break, but Eddie Newsum was unable to ground the ball. The setback was short-lived, as Dec Cook soon crossed for Goole’s bonus-point fourth try, again converted by Moore for 7–29.
With the Goole pack now dominant at the scrum and the side shifting from a kicking game to sustained phases, the pressure mounted. Lill was next to score after a clever pass from Andy Barrass, extending the lead to 7–36.
Hullensians responded with a moment of individual brilliance, their flanker breaking from a scrum near halfway to sprint clear and score, narrowing the deficit to 14–36.
However, that proved to be their final contribution. Replacement second row Craig Hutton added two late tries—both converted by Moore—to complete the scoring. The first came from an overthrown Hullensians lineout, and the second from close support play off a Goole lineout.
The final whistle confirmed a 50–14 victory.
With Hullensians enduring a difficult season, this was a result Goole would have targeted. Encouragingly, both forwards and backs looked dangerous, and despite missed chances, the team continues to put points on the board.
As the season approaches its conclusion, the focus will be on maintaining the high standards shown in the second half as Goole continue their climb up the table.
There were several contenders for Man of the Match, but the award rightly went to Louis Greaves. Featuring across all three front-row positions and contributing significantly around the field, it was arguably his most complete performance for the first team.
Attention now turns to next week’s home fixture against Keighley—an opportunity for Goole to avenge an earlier narrow defeat.
