Goole RUFC recorded their first away league victory of the season in emphatic fashion, running in nine tries in a commanding 18–57 win over Beverley RUFC. A rampant performance from Goole’s back line, including a hat-trick from winger Matty Backhouse, proved far too much for the home side to contain.
Fielding a strong starting XV, Goole welcomed back their preferred second-row pairing of Eddie Newsum and Charlie Walton, along with the returns of James Walton and James Chantry. While Goole enjoyed the edge up front, it was the new-look back division—featuring recent additions Declan Cook and Andy Barrass—that ultimately decided the contest with pace, precision, and clinical finishing.
Played in wet conditions, the opening exchanges were understandably scrappy, with handling errors from both sides. Beverley settled first and opened the scoring with a straightforward penalty after an early Goole infringement in front of the posts to take a 3–0 lead.
Goole responded quickly. After Danny Holt was held just short of the line and Beverley failed to clear their lines, the visitors struck through a trademark close-range drive from Will Townend to edge ahead, 3–5. Moments later, the large travelling Goole support was celebrating again as Townend turned provider, slipping a neat pass to Matty Backhouse, who ghosted past his defender to score the first of his three tries, 3–12.
Growing in confidence, Goole began to dominate both territory and possession, putting the Beverley pack under increasing pressure at the scrum. The next score followed soon after, with winger Luke Cooper finishing well in the corner to extend the lead to 3–17.
Beverley briefly reduced the deficit with another penalty following a rare spell of pressure in the Goole half, but this proved to be their final contribution of the first half. Goole finished strongly, adding two further converted tries before the interval. Sustained forward carries created space out wide, allowing Backhouse to claim his second with a simple catch-and-pass move. This was followed by a powerful finish from Declan Cook after Sam Smith and Backhouse combined to make ground from a Beverley clearance kick.
Half-time: Beverley 6 – 31 Goole
Any hopes of a Beverley revival were quickly extinguished after the restart. Just three minutes into the second half, Sam Smith weaved his way through a cluster of defenders to score, with Barrass adding the conversion to stretch the lead to 6–38.
To their credit, Beverley showed resilience and spent time camped inside the Goole 22, only to be denied by a superb try-saving tackle from replacement Craig Hutton. The missed opportunity proved costly, as Goole struck again when Andy Barrass intercepted a loose pass on his own 22 and sprinted the length of the field to score a fine solo try, which he duly converted, 6–45.
With James Chantry temporarily off following a yellow card, Beverley finally crossed the try line, capitalising on sustained pressure and a series of favourable decisions to make it 13–45. Any momentum, however, was short-lived.
Goole quickly reasserted control, running in two more tries. Backhouse completed his hat-trick with a well-taken finish before Sam Smith added his second of the afternoon, taking Goole beyond the half-century mark for the first time this season. Beverley had the final say with a late consolation try, leaving the full-time score at 18–57.
There were several standout performances for Goole, with the entire three-quarter line posing a constant threat. Newcomers Andy Barrass and Declan Cook impressed in particular, with Cook named Goole’s Man of the Match by the Beverley coaching staff. The return of Eddie Newsum and Charlie Walton also provided welcome stability and strong lineout options.
Attention now turns to next week’s home fixture, as league leaders Dinnington visit Westfield Banks. Goole will be eager to avenge their narrow 40–38 defeat earlier in the season in what promises to be another thrilling encounter.
Certainly a game not to be missed.
