With just one home league defeat of the season so far, a visit to Old Rishworthians after the hard fought game against Wath on Wednesday night was always going to be a tough task and so it proved as Goole looked somewhat jaded. Two training sessions and two tough games in six days proving to be too big a hurdle especially without props James Walton and Craig Fenton.
The game started in bright conditions as both teams struggled to put any real quality passages of play together with the home team opting to kick possession away due to a lack of any progress over the gain line. Despite the early possession Goole also looked sluggish with the ball as the early stages were evenly matched with no real quality on display. It took a penalty from Rhys Moore to put the first points on the board, quickly followed by one from the home team to level the score to 3-3 with neither team looking likely to score a try. The nearest Goole got was when Louis Greaves was tackled into touch a couple of metres from the home team try line before Aaron Jerry-Murray broke the deadlock with possession near the half way line and a kick into space that bounced lovely straight into his hands for him to score under the posts to give Goole a 3-10 lead after 27 minutes. Instead of using this score as a platform to take control of the game, Goole’s quality did not improve as the home team scored an unconverted try in the corner with 5 minutes of the half remaining, 8-10. This was immediately followed by a yellow card for Sam Smith as Rishworthians scored a second converted try and kicked a penalty, giving the home side 15 unanswered points in the final 5 minutes of the half. HT 18-10.
With Smith back on the field and Goole now having the extra man as a result of a home team yellow card, it was the ideal opportunity for Goole to get back into the game but were not capable of doing so, being very predictable in just about everything that they did. It was easy tackling practice for the home side as Goole failed to penetrate the home team defensive line. To make matters worse, two more sloppy Rishworthian tries followed to stretch their lead to 30-10 and Goole looking jaded in all areas. Louis Sugden managed to get over from close range following a Goole lineout, but it was never going to be a grand comeback as the rain came down, 30-15. In the final quarter of the game Goole were constantly penalised at almost every scrum for a variety of scrum offences as Rishworthians ran in their sixth try to bring the final score to 37-15.
Not many positive things to say about the Goole performance today as they looked very flat and predictable, with no real zip or spark in any area as the Wednesday night efforts took their toll. Charlie Walton was the pick of the players as a result of his numerous ball carrying efforts and it was great to see Ollie Raynor making his return off the bench. With a league match at league leaders Wath next Saturday it will be a week of recovery and reflection for the Goole backroom team and players as they put this disappointing performance behind them.
