Goole travelled to Halifax looking to avenge their home defeat earlier in the season, but put in one of their poorest performances of the season.
The home side started brightly testing the Goole defence which eventually forced a turnover, a penalty was awarded which was quickly taken by Rhys Moore who found Chris Wood in close support, he made 30 metres up field to release Steve Morris on his inside to gallop over beside the posts from 20 metres, Moore converting for 7 nil. A midfield battle ensued until midway through the half, player coach Will Turnbull was sin binned for a high tackle, unfortunately the retaliatory punch he received went unpunished and Goole were a man down for the next 10 minutes. The hosts applied pressure to the visitors depleted defence and the penalty count began to rise as Goole infringed and during the sin bin period the Halifax no.8 picked up from the base of a five metre scrum to dive over for a converted try to level the scores.
Goole tried to respond but uncharacteristic basic errors saw them fail to make significant inroads as several promising attacks broke down due to wayward passing and wrong decisions, the half ending with no further scores.
The second half continued in the same vein with Goole unable to build any pressure due to unforced errors until the Halifax winger was sin binned following a minor scuffle, allowing Goole to gain some territory, another quickly taken penalty saw a long pass release Danny Holt who put Tom Halliday away to squeeze in at the corner for an unconverted try to regain the lead 12-7. Once back at full strength the home side grabbed the initiative and a good line by the Halifax centre saw him take two tacklers over with him to score, the conversion just going wide to level the scores. Two minutes later they took the lead with a well taken penalty. 15-12. Soon afterwards Goole had a relatively simple chance to level the scores but the kick was pushed wide. The final few minutes saw the Halifax centre in the sin bin and Goole pushed hard for a score to win the game but a combination of solid home defence and wrong decisions saw them come up short and the hosts held on for a well deserved win.
Goole struggled all day with the referees interpretation of the breakdown, their usual turnover count drastically reduced by the Halifax "technique" over the ball, preventing the quick counter attacking game that has served them so well this term, but credit to the home side for their efforts in finding a way to nullify the Goole threat to claim the win.
Hopefully this was just a bad day at the office for Goole as they entertain 4th place Northallerton at Westfield in their penultimate game of this League campaign. Kick off is at 3.00pm and all support is welcome.
