Goole travelled to Manchester to take on Alnwinians in the 2nd Round of the RFU Cup and once again suffered another narrow defeat in a game that was there for the taking. Injuries and unavailability forcing a number of changes to the side that included a new 2nd row partnership of Hutton and Millward. With the ever-reliable Danny Holt also dropping out, Olli Pearson stepped in at full back where he acquitted himself very well with some lively early kick-return runs.
The home team kicked off with a stiff breeze at their backs as Goole gathered possession and went through multiple phases with excellent ball retention but disappointingly handed the initiative to Alnwinians after conceding four penalties in the opening six minutes to allow the home side to take the lead with a penalty, 3-0. With Goole now under pressure in their own 22 they successfully held up two home team drives to the try line with temporary relief coming from a break from deep started by Townend and carried on by Walker and Pearson that resulted in Goole being awarded a penalty near the home team try line. Unfortunately, nothing from the threat as they once again conceded penalties that allowed Alnwinians to clear their lines. With quality possession for the home side from their lineouts Goole had to work hard to stem the resulting threats, and it was disappointing when a straightforward missed tackle in centre field resulted in the Alnwinians centre going over for a converted try under the Goole posts with the last play of the first half. HT 10-0.
Despite conceding the late points Goole certainly fancied their chances of overcoming the narrow home team lead, especially following a successful early penalty from Rhys Moore to get Goole on the scoreboard, 10-3. Then, with the Goole backs still struggling to break the home team defensive line, they went off the boil as Alnwinians took control in the scrums to put Goole on the back foot and defending their try line. This they successfully did but continued to be penalised to allow the home team to maintain the pressure on the hard-working Goole defence. With an easy kick at goal declined the home team opted for a 5m scrum they were now dominating but came away with nothing after failing to score a try after they pushed Goole backwards and over the line. An alert Rhys Moore stealing the ball out of his opposite number’s hands as he went to gather the ball for the try. With no success in their try scoring endeavours Alnwinians opted for a penalty kick at goal to re-establish the ten-point lead at 13-3. With the clock winding down, Goole pressed for the score they needed with Townend being adjudged to have been in touch as he stretched for a try in the corner. Despite the disappointment they continued to press but the threat was suppressed due to them conceding four successive penalties at various game situations. This obviously was just the boost that the home team needed with the final whistle just minutes away. Not to be too dejected Goole came back to get the try they needed when Townend picked up from the base of the 5m scrum near the home team try line. A simple pop pass to Aaron Jerry-Murray to touch down in the corner was quickly followed by a quality successful conversion by Moore to bring the score to 13-10 with the game now in added-time. With possession from the restart Matty Lill broke through the Alnwinians defensive line to run past halfway before passing to the supporting Luke Cooper who was tackled, and with no support, Alnwinians gained possession as they looked to see the game out. In the end the result was secured after Goole conceded their 18th penalty of match to allow the ball to be kicked into touch for a tight win for Alnwinians. 13-10.
In the end it was another close defeat for Goole in a tight competitive game with limited quality moments. In the end Alnwinians just about deserved their win with Goole being unable to put their attacking game together. Penalties conceded once again being a major factor in the outcome of the match. Man of the match went to Will Townend for his overall contribution and hard yards gained with ball in hand.
