The sun was shining and the ground was good for running rugby in Goole’s first away game for some time against a very physical but pacey Scunthorpe side. Although conditions were good for handling Goole were not making the most of the conditions
and mishandling allowed the Scunthorpe side to boss most of the first half, but for a sustained period where the Goole team rallied in the Scunthorpe twenty-two, threatening to break the defensive line, but eventually lost the ball to the Scunthorpe number
ten who used his pace to take the ball from his own twenty-two to score. The breakaway tries continued straight away when the Scunthorpe number ten again scored and the first half finished 6 -0, with Scunthorpe worthy leaders.

With drinks taken, breath regained and words of wisdom from the Goole Coach it was time for the Goole side to dig deep and give it their all – and give it their all they did. But for the occasional - and still unexplainable – fumble, the Goole lads rallied hard, the backs broke through the initial defences and Ollie Rhuman showed good pace to round the final defenders to bring Goole onto the board 6 – 1. Goole’s physicality, defence, scum and self-belief were now gaining momentum as they imposed themselves on the Scunthorpe side. Inevitably the Goole side broke through the now waning Scunthorpe defence as Billy Vagg took two Scunthorpe defenders with him over the try line with one of his many powerful runs of the day to make the score 6-2.  Goole were now looking the far stronger side and multi-phase domination by the ever-present pack was pushing them deep into the Scunthorpe half. From here a four man overlap opportunity for the Goole backs came and a cross field kick pass for the winger went high but the kick unfortunately was taken by the Scunthorpe number ten who gratefully used his terrific pace to again break away and score – very much against the run of play. Not to be disheartened though the Goole side were quickly back onto the attack and when
the Goole powerhouse Ollie Sugden found himself just 10 yards from the Scunthorpe line he simply bounced off the defence to go over and score Goole’s third try. Goole scored again when TJ Packer used his strength to push off a defender then accelerated away down the left wing to score - what at the time, seemed a debateable try short of the line - in the corner. The now imperious Goole side were piling on the pressure and with another searing attack from the base of the scrum, the ever-impressive man on the match Ashton Neal
broke through the Scunthorpe defence to score Goole’s fifth try of the day. Unfortunately, the clock was against the Goole side on this occasion and the game ended in favour of the Scunthorpe side, after their deserved first half performance. Goole can certainly
look back with pride though on the way they turned around what looked like being their heaviest defeat of the season into a close call and how they learned a very valuable lesson in never to give up.
